apricot’s closet: suspenders!

The shirt is from Wet Seal, years ago; suspenders are my father’s, I think. If not, then I have no clue where they are from; black shorts & sandals from Ross; & my Rayban wanna-be sunglasses — that I love ever so much — are from Target.

I never thought that I could make it work — I was always afraid to try — but I did & I adore my suspenders now. The only complaint I have is that these shorts were not equipped for them, causing a lot of riding up & pulling & tugging on my part (see third picture). Beauty is pain, as they say, & this was worth it.

Originally, Lover hated this outfit. He loathed it. He thought that I looked… nerdy. Maybe a little like Steven Urkel. I even showed him pictures on the internet of some other gorgeous fashion forward girls who rocked suspenders & he STILL felt like it was silly. “I just don’t understand it, Honey,” he said, his face looking confused. “It just looks a little ridiculous.” At first, his harsh judgment almost scared me into not wearing this outfit (I can’t remember now where we were going when I was sporting this) but I felt like I looked smashing in it & I kept it on.

After a while, he came around & said that he liked it; he stammered a bit when he said this, but that is because I know he is still having a hard time “getting it.” Bless his heart. I am in the process of broadening his horizons when it comes to fashion forwardness. He is a little reluctant, but when I can convince him of something he thinks he genuinely hates, he actually grows quite fond of it. Even if it takes some begging for him to “just please try it on & see what it looks like before you dismiss it, honey! Please! Do it for me!”

He hates to admit it, but I am his personal stylist.

I have to beg my guy to try stuff on, too. But luckily he usually agrees with my killer sense of style.

Except when I ask him what I should wear he ALWAYS says “A skirt”. “Which skirt?”, I’ll ask and he will respond “The short one”.

I, btw, love your suspenders- and your floors are so clean!

I don’t know if I could ever wear suspenders, but they do look pretty cute on you.

I tried to wear suspenders a while back, you know, gay-style…even my friends weren’t down with it. It’s probably because I’m not as cute and sassy as you and for that, I am very sad.

@ batspit: Guys are so resistant to change! Especially when the advice is coming from a woman’s perspective. Sigh. That’s why I like men’s fashion magazines so much… they say everything I’ve been trying to say, but he just listens to them. ;]

@ katelin: thank you! I think everyone can rock suspenders, if they really wanted to.

@ ben: Thank you! But… I am curious to know what “gay-style” suspender wearers look like! =]

Pretty much just tight jeans and leave them hanging down. Basically you’re wearing suspenders without benefiting from them whatsoever. Instead, you think you look really great while they keep snagging on everything and knocking over chairs.

    Very cute!

Cute! I’m kind of on the fence of the whole suspender trend, but I think this tipped the vote for me. Also, your shoes are tres fab!

@ Ben: Ooooh. Got it. :] Thanks for the clarification.

    @ Holly: thanks! =]

@ Gretch-a-sketch: I’m happy to know that I made an impact in the polls, so to speak. :] & thanks; these shoes will be seen VERY often here, for I love them too.

You look super fantastiche! Seriously, just darling. Please invest in some more suspenders! I love them–I have sequined ones. :/
I got the magazine today! Thank you, you are too, too nice! Your letter will be coming ASAP. Um, don’t be too shocked if the post office slashes it, though. They get suspicious of my letters, the packaging is too creative for them, so it must be hiding drugs, concealed cash, and weapons of biological warfare, right? :/
    Haha, but really.

    =)

    And I _<)

oh im so sorry. “sth” is supposted to mean “something”. i thought you know what it means because when i lived in the u.s. they wrote sth all the time. so where are you from?

  14. on Friday, May 9th, 2008 at 6:51 am:

My comment messed up a lot. :/

What I actually said was, “Your suspenders are too hot to handle!”

    And,

“I AM SO JEALOUS OF YOUR SHORT HAIR!!”

    =)

Uhmm I need a stylist. You look great!

  16. on Friday, May 9th, 2008 at 8:52 am:

SO CUTE. I’m in love with those sandals! Oo, I meant to ask, what part of LA are you in, neighborhood-wise? I don’t know which part I’ll be moving to yet, but once I move out there, I’ll be staying with a friend in Venice until I get a job/apartment…

  17. on Friday, May 9th, 2008 at 8:54 am:

    @ denise: thank you! :]

@ Natalie: I am so glad you got the magazine! I’m surprised that it didn’t take so long. I thought you were going to get it next month, or something … ;/

@ What Liz Said: thanks! I like the combo as well.

@ Nicole Lee: aww, thank you. :] I’m feeling the love.

@ denise: It’s okay! I am from California, near LA. The only reason I don’t know what “sth” means is because I’m not really up on the funky lingo like most people are. Upon meeting my husband, I had no CLUE what a lot of different things meant. He had to school me on everything it seemed. :]

@ Nicole Lee: Hahaha! It’s alright. Thank you just the same!

@ K: If you ever need any tips, feel free to let me know! Maybe I could be an over the interweb stylist…? ;]
